Before the first chartered high school, during the years following the Civil War educational efforts dwindled. The Village of Enon and Mad River Township both had high schools within the village after Edward Branther started a township high school in the Knights of Pythias (KP) Hall on the north east corner of Main and Green Streets around 1900.

A record of the first graduating class of the Township High School in 1901 showed one graduate, Charles Rebert. The second graduating class also had one graduate, George Collier. The following year Pearl Bowers Durst, LeRoy Levan, and Raymond Schellabarger were listed graduates in 1903 which was the last year of the two high schools in the Village of Enon. Village officials realized their inability to maintain anything but a third rate school and voted the school out into the township. It was the first time in Ohio a village district voted itself out into the township and the State Commissioner of Education commended Enon highly for its action.

During the late 19th to early 20th centuries, in addition to the Township High School and the Elementary school in Enon, Mad River Township had the following schools: Boone Station, Center School, Sulphur Springs School, Maple Grove School, Spread Eagle School, Oakland School, Rocky Point School, Blue Stem School, Oak Grove School, and Snyderville School.

Question: What school was located at 3065 Hustead Road?

Going back to last week's trivia question, "what was the name of the first chartered high school in Enon?" did you guess Enon High? If you did, that is incorrect. In 1903-04 when a new four year course of study for high schools was adopted by the state department of education, Mad River Township High School was chartered. The first four-year class called the "Seven Oaks Class", graduated May 2, 1905.
