In what turned out to be the second of three consecutive losses, the Greenon Knights dropped a 65-43 decision to Stebbins in a CBC crossover game last Tuesday night.   Khaleal McCormick had 26 points and 6 steals for the Indians.  Anthony Colletti led Greenon with 18 points and 18 rebounds, in a fine effort.
Stebbins set out immediately to pressure Greenon’s corps of outside shooters.  It worked to perfection, as the Indians forced six turnovers in the opening period on the way to a 16-8 lead.
Greenon’s floor leader, Josh Pilcher, picked up his second foul with 55 seconds remaining in that opening quarter.  The Knights would pile up nine fouls within the first 13 minutes of play.  Colletti scored 8 points in a row to bring the Knights within 6 before he was whistled for his third foul.  The Indians ran off six in a row after that.  Coach Tim Lacy, normally mild, was given a warning by the officials after he registered a complaint at the 10-3 disparity in personal fouls. It was 34-22 at the half.
McCormick set out to take over the game in the third, but he missed three dunk attempts and had a shot blocked by Chase Green, who was giving away a foot in height.  It didn’t hurt Stebbins, however.  Greenon could muster only three points, all from Josh Bannick.  McCormick and Colletti swapped baskets twice as the final quarter began.  Colletti fouled out with five minutes left, and the game became a   flurry of free throws until the end.  The loss left the Knights at 7-7, while the Indians moved to 8-6.  Lacy said, “We have to stay positive.   We need to learn not to let the environment bring us down. We panicked a little bit.  This is a new pressure for this team.”  Lacy’s  season-long comments on consistency were proven in this game. The Knights were 0-12 from three-point range.  Pilcher and Cody Carpenter were a combined 6-27 from the floor, owing to the high pressure defense.
The coach was optimistic as his team prepared to face Graham.  The Knights came almost all the way back from a 21-9 first quarter hole at home, before dropping a 46-36 decision.  Pilcher regained his shooting touch, scoring 12 on 5 for 10 shooting, and Colletti recorded his eight straight double-double, with 14 points and 11 boards.  The 6-2 junior led the way the next night when Ponitz came to visit.  The knights avenged last year’s loss with a 70-61 victory.  Colletti had 27 points on 17 of 21 from the foul line and another monster game on the boards with 16.  Colletti’s season averages of 20 and 13 should earn him some area recognition.  Pilcher continued his revived play, with 19 against the Cougars, while Green came off the bench for 11.  The Knights stand 8-8 headed into this week’s Friday night trip to Urbana.  The Climbers are a spotless 6-0 in the division, including a 22-point win over Greenon.  The Knights will need to play their best.
