The Greenon girls’ basketball team continued their fine season this week, beating Indian Lake 55-34 on Saturday behind Teddi Tankersley's 21 points, and Yellow Springs 47-22 on Wednesday before falling to Graham 37-35 in another conference matchup Saturday night.   The Knights are now 10-3 on the season, and 5-2 in the Mad River Division of the Central Buckeye Conference.  Greenon leads the CBC in team defense, having allowed only 38.5 points per game.  That and an unselfish offense have Coach Gary Falkenbach’s team contending for a championship.
Wednesday, the Knights travelled to Yellow Springs to face the Bulldogs.    The inside tandem of Heather Slaughter and Teddi Tankersley scored the first eight points of the game, but the Bulldogs got some inside play as well, and it was only 12-8 as the quarter ended. Tankersley scored six of the next seven points during a 7-0 Greenon run.  Jenna Robertson extended the lead to 10 with a long three, but Maryah Martin banked one in from a tough angle.  Slaughter then hit a three and a two to close out the half at 27-15.
In the third period Greenon showed the home crowd their defensive prowess.  Picking up from slaughter, the Knights held the Bulldogs scoreless while running the lead to 38-16.    Yellow Springs hit 3 of 6 free throws for their only points of the period, and Jen Miller got those back with a trey with 8 seconds left.
In the fourth, the Knights ran their offense and were selective with their shots.  Paloma Wiggins made the Bulldogs’ only field goal of the half with 1:15 left in the game. The final score marked the sixth time this season that the Knights have held an opponent below 35 points.  Falkenbach said, “We had a plan, and we executed it.   They have a great coach (legendary ex-Versailles mentor Tim Barga), and he had them ready to play.  We just need to get ready for Graham.”
The Falcons apparently weren’t ready at first.  Greenon got off to a first-quarter lead of 18-6, but faltered during the fourth quarter.  Whitney Robinson led the Knights with 11 points.  Taylor Dyke  had two three pointers and six free throws to pace Graham, now 6-1 and a game ahead of the Knights, and tied with Urbana in the division.  This week Greenon faced Arcanum on Monday night.  Tough games On Wednesday with Tecumseh and Bianca Quisenberry, and a rematch with Urbana on Saturday follow.  Get out and watch this team!
