Greenon rode a 50-point first half to an 86-60 victory over Arcanum in non-league boys’ basketball action last Tuesday evening.   Anthony Colletti, Josh Pilcher, and Cody Carpenter combined for 57 points to lead the Knights.  Colletti, the leading scorer and rebounder in the Central Buckeye Conference, had 23 points and 13 boards.  Pilcher had three three-pointers on his way to 21, and Carpenter collected three steals while adding 14 points.  Grady Garno had 23 points (12 in the fourth quarter) to lead the Trojans.  Greenon went to 5-4 as Arcanum fell to 2-8.
Aaron DeBolt got the Knights off to a flying start with two treys inside the first three minutes.  Arcanum went into a zone, but Colletti and Carpenter penetrated the defense for scores at the rim.  Pilcher got into the act with a three from the right elbow.  The Knights missed only two shots during the period, and Colletti collected five rebounds.
Carpenter went on a personal 7-0 run at the beginning of the second with help from a nice steal and feed from Seth Currier.  It took a pair of free throws from Simon Troutwine to break the Greenon run at 11; the 6'4" freshman played very well for the Trojans.  Greenon was just too quick.  Currier got a pass from Chase Green after another steal, then Carpenter took another one the length of the floor.  He ended the half with yet another layup off a jumped pass, and it was 50-16.
Midway through the third quarter the atmosphere got a little rough.  The Trojans were frustrated and began to play more physically.  The  whistles started blowing, and points piled up at the free throw stripe.  The lead grew to as many as 42 points before Coach Tim Lacy could finally get Colletti and Pilcher off the court.  Arcanum scored the last ten points of the game in a run and gun fashion, making the score closer than the game was played.
“Great first half!” said Lacy afterwards.  It was a night when the perimeter strategy worked as it is supposed to.  “We have to be consistent, because when Josh and Carp are hitting those shots, it will open things up a lot for Colletti.”
On Friday, the Knights dropped a Mad River game to Ben Logan,68-62.  The Raiders led by two on their home floor before closing out the Knights in the fourth quarter.  Foul trouble for Colletti and Carpenter slowed Greenon’s pressure defense.  Pilcher led the Knights with 19 points.  This week’s games are with Emmanuel Christian on Tuesday and Indian Lake on Friday.  Look for the story here.
