Last season the Greenon Lady Knights won eight games all year.  They reached that mark in their tenth game with two victories this past week.  On Wednesday, the girls toppled Northwestern 47-21, and on Saturday they beat Ben Logan on the road, 49-44.  The Knights are now 8-2 overall and 4-1, a half game back of Urbana in the CBC Mad River Division.
Against Northwestern, Greenon’s hallmark defense was on display.  It was 7-6 after one quarter, mainly because the Warriors could only manage to get off five shots. The Knights weren’t hitting, but they would get many more opportunities.  Coach Gary Falkenbach altered his rotation because Brianna Jones and Moriah Scott were away for the holidays.  Emily Cale and Sara Hupp made early appearances, as did JV callus Jen Miller and Taylor Maas.  Falkenbach said, “My captains came to me and said Taylor had earned a varsity jersey, so we gave her one.”  Maas scored four points in her varsity debut.  The score was 21-14 at halftime.  The Warriors were shooting sixty percent, but they only had ten shots.
The Knights kept the defensive pressure up in the second half, and Heather Slaughter got hot, with three buckets, including a rare three.  Teddi Tankersley and Whitney Robinson also found the three-point range.  By the time the final buzzer sounded, Greenon had forced 29 turnovers on 15 steals, and had 10 assists on 18 baskets.  That is team play defined.  Tankersley and Slaughter had 12 points each; Robinson added 11 with five steals.  Alison Viney had 7 for the Warriors, who with a Saturday night loss to Graham, are now 1-10.
On Saturday night, the long bus ride to Logan paid off.  Robinson had 15 points and ten boards.  Slaughter and Tankersley combined for 16 rebounds, and Liane Masquelier dished out seven assists.  The team faces another bus ride Saturday when they venture up to Indian lake.  In the season opener, the Knights put together a 55-34 win, despite going 1 for 21 from three-point territory.  If you can’t get up there, make sure to look for the story here.  See you at the game!
