The Greenon Knights boys’ basketball team went 1 and 1 in two contests last week to keep their season’s mark level at 4-4.  On Tuesday, Tim Lacy’s team subdued Xenia Christian 78-51, then lost a 59-58 heartbreaker at Northwestern on Friday night.  The loss kept Greenon in a four-way tie in their division, trailing the undefeated Urban Hillclimbers.
The game Tuesday began with an energized Ambassador team jumping off to a 15-8 first-quarter advantage.  They forced four turnovers and went inside right away.  The Knights seemed to be taken off guard, and the perimeter game wasn’t working.  Jason Holloway had seven of his team high 18 points in the first period.
Greenon got it going after the initial doldrums.  They stepped up the defensive pressure, led by Cody Carpenter, who recorded five steals.  With the score 17-12 Ambassadors,  Josh Pilcher hit a two and a three, then Seth Currier knocked down a three to give the Knights their first lead   Anthony Colletti hit three shots without a miss.  The half ended 34-23, and even with the 26-point quarter representing their biggest offensive output this season, the Knights weren’t done.
After a Xenia basket stopped an 11-0 run, the Ambassadors got to within 10, then drew a fourth foul on Colletti with two minutes still on the third-quarter clock.  However Travis Gray hit a jumper, and Pilcher followed with a half hook from the lane to make it 47-33 going into the final period.
The margin held at fourteen, and Colletti fouled out with 6:16 left.  XC’s Richard Kensinger missed the front end of a one-and-one.  Carpenter scored off that rebound and five-foot-zero point guard Chase Green lofted a three.  It was run and gun the rest of the way, and Greenon had the better of that, scoring 20 points in the last four minutes to seal the win.  Colletti had 20 points and 9 rebounds before fouling out to pace the Knights; Pilcher had 17, Carpenter 11, and Currier 10.  Everyone played well, and when the Knights get Brandon McNeil and Josh Bannick healthy, they will be in a good spot.
Lacy said that McNeil had a sore hip that limited his playing time.  He attributed the slow start to “working out the kinks from the Kenton Ridge game.”  He said that the bench had done a lot, but must get better. “We’re trying to get eight guys playing together.  (DeBolt) will have to do a lot, because he’s athletic, and he’s bought into what we’re doing."  The coach also addressed the foul troubles plaguing Colletti, one of the area’s leading scorers.  “He’s aggressive, and you don’t want to take that away. Most scorers are slashers, and they will pick up some fouls with the body.  He just got antsy.”
In the Northwestern game, it took Cody Lough’s two free throws with seven seconds left to nail it down for the Warriors.  It was reminiscent of last season’s game where Levi Burns  beat the Knights almost by himself.  Colletti had 18, along with 24 rebounds.  Pilcher and Carpenter had 12 and 10 respectively, but it wasn’t quite enough.  This week sees the Knights facing Arcanum at home and travelling to Benjamin Logan.  The Raiders are also 2-2 in the Mad River Division, having coasted to a big win over Indian Lake on Friday night after building a 21-point first-half lead.
