The Greenon Knights took fresh legs into Thursday night’s game against Kenton Ridge, but Josh Bannick was not able to play.
The team played hard, but dropped a 56-50 decision to the Cougars, playing at home. Aaron Davis led Kenton Ridge with 11 points, while Christian Thompson posted 10 points and 11 rebounds. Nick Lias also had 11 boards. Anthony Colletti went for 16 points to lead the Knights. Josh Pilcher and Cody Carpenter had 11 each. The Knights are now 3-3. Kenton Ridge is 3-4. The Cougars took an early lead, but Greenon came out of the first quarter tied at 11. Colletti scored 7 points, as Kenton Ridge couldn’t convert several close in shots. The Cougars had 15 offensive rebounds to only 4 for the Knights, underlining Bannick’s absence. Pilcher led a Greenon surge in the second with two nice drives, but two turnovers turned into easy buckets for the Cougars. It was 27-26 Greenon at half. Both teams had worries; the Knights had Brandon McNeil with three fouls, and the Cougars had missed way too many easy shots. Carpenter hit a corner three to make it 35-28 Knights early in the third, then a jumper to extend the lead to 39-31. Pilcher and Carpenter each logged their third fouls. Carpenter stole a three-quarter court inbound pass and laid it in for a 44-33 advantage. The Cougars got it to seven by the end of the period. The Knights needed eight more minutes of defense to pull it out. After a pair of Colletti free throws, Davante Harper hit consecutive hoops at the rim. Greenon took a time out. Pilcher and McNeil both drew their fourth foul in the next minute. Lias hit a jumper to make it 49-47. Colletti drew a foul on a nice feed from Aaron DeBolt. He made the first shot, but missed the second. With 1:48 remaining, Colletti was so wide open that a startled official whistled him for travelling. The basket was waved off, and Adam Roberson gave the Cougars the lead 51-50 the next time down. After a time out, Colletti went underneath. Despite five shots at the basket and four Cougars surrounding him, there was no foul called. Davis hit a layup, then Thompson drained free throws at the end to preserve the win. Coach Tim Lacy said that both teams played well and that it was an entertaining game to watch. He said that Bannick would be ready to go after the first of the year. The Knights will certainly need their senior post to help their inside game and the rotation. Only six players saw the court, and three of them had four fouls. Lacy noted that in his first season, the Cougars won by 35, and last year the Knights played well in a 12-point loss. The team’s progress is evident. This week’s games are against Xenia Christian and Northwestern. |
