The Greenon Lady Knights went to 3-0 with a 47-41 victory over Graham Saturday night at Greenon.  Heather Slaughter led the Knights with 16 points, and Whitney Robinson had 13.  Robinson keyed a strong defensive effort, while holding Graham’s standout guard Taylor Dyke to 17 hard-won points.  Graham is now 2-2 and 1-1 in the Mad River Division of the Central Buckeye Conference. Greenon won the JV game 50-26 behind 11 each from Jennifer Miller and Brooke Robinson.
The Knights had a turnover-plagued first quarter, giving up the ball six times.  They still managed to hold the lead after the period, 10-6, owing to a minute-long stretch when the Falcons could not get off a shot. When they finally did, Slaughter blocked it to end the quarter. Things got a little sloppy in the second as Graham got a couple of easy inside baskets.  They drew a seventh foul on the Knights midway through, but it didn’t hurt.  It was anyone’s game at halftime, 22-21 Greenon.
It was two minutes into the second half before Dyke broke the scoring ice with two free throws that gave the Falcons the lead.  Catherine Hanlin converted a three-point play at the four-minute mark, but Slaughter cashed an offensive board, and Moriah Scott drove for a layup to make it 28-26.  The Knights would not relinquish the lead again.  Slaughter would convert two more offensive rebounds and a free throw in the final minutes.  Greenon led 35-29 at the break.
Graham had the ball to start the fourth, and went another full minute before getting off a shot.  Dyke began to handle the ball on every possession; she scored all 12 of the Falcons fourth-quarter points.   A bank shot from the top of the key got the deficit to one, but Liane Masquelier found Slaughter off the pick and roll.  The Knights then turned to Robinson, and she hit three of four free throws to put the game out of reach.
Coach Gary Falkenbach said, “Whit did a great job on Dyke.  We knew they were going to go to her, but Whit got after her.  I loved the look on our girls’ faces when they (Graham) got the lead.  It was like they had no doubt they were going to win, and they did.”  The coach also praised Masquelier for her play. “It was good game management.  People are surprised that she’s only a sophomore, but she doesn’t play like a sophomore.”
The Knights stayed home for Monday night’s matchup with a Miami East team that has won three games by an average margin of 34 points.  The girls then travel to Shawnee Thursday night.  Look for coverage of that contest in next week’s paper.  See you at the game!
