As the final pieces of the fall sports season came to an end last weekend with losses by both Tecumseh and Tippecanoe on the football field, all attention can now be turned to the hardwood.  Yes, it’s finally time to get this basketball season underway.
Now as some of you know, basketball is a huge part of my existence.  And life in the Miami-Clark County areas this winter will, without a doubt, be memorable.
The girls teams tipped off scrimmages last weekend, with a full schedule over the next two weeks, leading up to the November 25 season opening day. For the girls of Tippecanoe, Tecumseh, Greenon, and Bethel, some will experience much success, and others will key on improvement every week to challenge, once tournament time arrives.
Tippecanoe will have a fun team to watch this season, as three starters return.  Morgan Miller, a 5’9” senior guard is being recruited by several Division Three colleges, and I expect her to make her choice very soon.
Ellise Sharpe is a 5’11” senior wing, who is another player with the ability to play in college.  Add in returning junior Erica Comer, and the Lady Red Devils look to challenge for the CBC title.  They also have a handful of solid role players returning, along with some younger talent.  Freshman Halee Printz is one of the top 10 freshmen in the Dayton area and could emerge on the scene quickly.
Another team in the coverage area, who will challenge for the league title, is Tecumseh, coming off a sectional final appearance last season. This could be their best year in a while, and much of that has to do with 5’8” junior Bianca Quisenberry, the top junior in the Dayton area.  She led the area in scoring, and if she can stay healthy, will be the leading force for the Arrows.
Chelsey Davis, 6’0” senior, is coming off a great 20-win volleyball season, and wants to make her last season her best.  I also like the athleticism of junior Megan Christmann, along with Brittany Frappier, Jennifer Vlasic and Miranda Mougey.
One team, who I think could struggle early, is Bethel.  But that is until they get the right mix of kids playing together.  There will be some different faces this season, and others who decided not to play.  They will need to develop a leader, and they have some quality kids back to put together a successful season.
As for the Greenon Knights, I look for them to compete with Urbana for the Mad River Division title.  Whitney Robinson, a 5’9” senior is one of the league’s top players, and several younger players should also step up.
Tippecanoe, Tecumseh, and Greenon will all be a part of the second-annual Troy Lady Trojans Preview, set for November 19.  Next week, I will have a preview of that event, along with top players to watch.  If you are a basketball fan, this is a day of hoops you will not want to miss.
