Residents of Enon learned the basics of carrying concealed weapons at this month’s neighborhood watch meeting.
Jim Stouffer, an instructor for concealed carry courses in Clark County, gave a presentation on gun safety and how to conceal them.  He stressed the importance of taking care of one's gun and being aware of one's surroundings when handling a firearm.    “Every bullet that leaves the barrel has your name on it, and you’re responsible,” said Stouffer.
Important tips for handling a gun are to make sure it isn’t loaded when it’s being handled. Fingers need to be kept off the trigger until one is ready to fire, and keep it pointed in a safe direction.
In addition to the basics of taking care of a gun, he also discussed other fundamentals for concealing a weapon in clothing and in a holster.  When purchasing a firearm, it’s important to select one that feels comfortable to one's body when it’s concealed.  Part of concealing a weapon is purchasing a holster that doesn’t allow the gun to fall out easily, and it also needs to cover the trigger to prevent accidents from occurring.   “Wearing a concealed a handgun is like buying underwear; it either fits or it doesn’t,” he said.  Although Ohio law doesn’t require a person to conceal their gun in a holster, Stouffer recommended it for safety purposes.
The last point Stouffer addressed was the importance of making sure that one is mentally capable of using a weapon.  If one is unable to defend him or herself under stressful conditions or feels unable to use a gun against someone, it could be all the attacker needs to do the person harm.  “It’s not in our nature to enjoy thinking that we may have to shoot someone, but you must be willing to do it if the need arises,” he said.
