Village Council Begins Search for New Police Chief PDF Print E-mail

The Enon Village Council members met to discuss the process for hiring a new police chief at their regular meeting on June 12.  Mayor Tim Howard proposed a more professional method for doing so.  In the past, the council collected resumes and screened potential candidates. After that, a selection committee was formed to help decide who would be an appropriate match for the position. “I think this is an opportunity to take a different approach,” said Howard.
This time the council has decided to use the Ohio Association of Chief of Police to find an appropriate police chief.  The OACP is a non-profit organization that is used to fill positions in police departments.  The council has already called nearby communities such as Urbana, Tipp City, Beavercreek and Springfield to discuss the results that they received by using the OACP. “Every community I called has had nothing but positive things to say about it,” said Kristy Thome, the administrator of Enon.
In addition to advertising with the OACP, the council is also enlisting the help of The Kettering Group.  TKG works with the OACP to help screen officers for jobs.  TKG takes up to six candidates, puts them through a series of professional tests, and then ranks them with a numeric score.  The council is then free to view the scores and choose which person is qualified for the position.  “I think that it behooves all of us to go outside the normal process, look for the best candidate we can get whether they be young or old, and then come forth with a professional police department,” added Rick Hanna , Enon village council member.
At this time Stephen Walker, a retired police chief from Centerville, is filling in as an interim police chief.  “We are really lucky to have him,” said council member Jerry Crane. Walker retired over a year ago, but has agreed to help Enon for at least 90 days while the council searches for someone to fill the position full-time.
