The Greenon Local School Board held their organizational meeting on Thursday, January 12.  Following the swearing in of Mark Remmetter and Dennis Henry, elected to the board in November, the board members elected Dennis Henry board president and Keith Culp vice-president.  The third Thursday of each month was established as the regular meeting date for the board at 7 p.m. in the Indian Valley Media Center.  Board members appointed Michael Todd as the Title IX Compliance Officer for 2012.  Culp will continue in the role of Legislative Liaison; Becky Hale, Treasurer Pro-Tem; and Mark Remmetter as Student Achievement Liaison.  Board members volunteered to serve as building liaisons.  Enon Elementary, Dennis Henry; Hustead Elementary, Mark Remmetter; Indian Valley, Becky Hale; Greenon High School, Dr. Henning; and Bus Garage, Keith Culp.
Mr. Culp reported that Ohio has received 70 million dollars in "Race to the Top" money.  Superintendent Dan Bennett noted that Greenon Local will receive a share of the funds.  During his report to the board, Bennett acknowledged that the district has coninued to work on the ADA compliance for the district buildings.  Hustead Elementary is now compliant; however Greenon High School will continue to be updated to meet compliance.
Mr.Bennett reported that the district will have presentations on February 8 during the day for students and teachers titled “The Voice of America’s Bullied Students” presented by Jodee Blanco, author of “Please Stop Laughing at Me.”  MS. Blanco will hold presentations for parents at 8:30 p.m. in the Indian Valley gym.  For more information, visit the district web site.
According to Bennett, the district is successfully moving forward with a number of teams / committees.  He noted that the Support Operations Leadership Team is now complete and working.  This team involves members of the food service, transportation and other support groups.  “It is exciting to see our teams up and running,” said Bennett.  At the meeting, members of the "Race to the Top" Team and the Curriculum Team were present.  Team members Jeanne Milord and Heidi Readler presented a packet to board members which outlined the progress being made by the Curriculum Team.  Readler explained how the team has been able to meet and progress in the area of English/Language Arts and Math to date.  A pilot program is underway to collect data on students that will travel with them from grade K to 12 noting progress in the curriculum areas.  According to Milord and Readler, teachers are meeting and working together to share dialog and ideas across the curriculum and across grade levels to enhance and improve the learning experience for all students.  “We are a goal-oriented, data-driven organization,” said Bennett.  “In time we will have a plan that will be working and fits with 'Race to the Top'," Bennett said.  He encouraged board members to go directly to the team members with questions.  He noted that this program will allow teachers to follow individual students from grade to grade noting improvements and areas needing further intervention.  Bennett stated that he “wants teachers to have the data and to be able to use it.”
Dennis Henry stated that the process will not leave any child out and that he is “thrilled that this is a team effort.”
Jeanne Milord explained to board members that teachers will be able to “see if progress is being made and will have access to interventions that worked with students in grades past."
Principal Mike Weaver commended the Superintendent by saying that the “leadership has been phenomenal.”
In other business, the board accepted a donation of $750 from Northrop Grumman that is designated for the STEM Program at Indian Valley.  The board accepted the retirement of Kim Warnick, Intervention Specialist at Indian Valley at the end of the school year.  Supplemental contracts for spring sports were approved.
