Residents of the Enon community were saddened to learn of the passing of Councilman Stephen Bowers on Thursday, January 5, 2012. Mr. Bowers was an Air Force Vietnam veteran with 27 years serving in the military having served four tours in Southeast Asia.  Following his retirement, he worked for 8 years at Navistar and has spent the last 10 years at Wright Patterson Air Force Base working for the Department of Defense.

Bowers served the Village of Enon for the past 6 years as a council member.  He was a member of the water and streets and sidewalks committees.  He also served as the public safety committee chair.  According to Mayor Tim Howard, Bowers was kind enough to drive around the village streets looking for the potholes and worked closely with Howard when he was the Village Administrator.  “He was very knowledgeable on the committees and was very familiar with the police department,” said Howard.  Former Mayor Cliff Vernon described Bowers as “a beautiful guy” who was “quiet but profound in his comments and helped everyone who called him”.  “We will miss his frankness,” said Mayor Howard noting that Bowers always did what was right for the village even though at times it was “tough” to do.

Neighbor and fellow council member Rick Hanna noted that Bowers “loved motorcycles” and could be found enjoying a ride even when it required being “bundled up” in recent weeks.  Hanna also was reminded of how much Bowers and his wife Sheila enjoyed taking care of the yard and gardening.  “He was a great neighbor” and had a very positive attitude said Hanna.  Hanna also described Bowers as a “mentor” for other council members.

It was obvious when talking with fellow council members and the mayors, that Stephen Bowers was a positive person despite some challenges over the past few years.  Friends and family members will no doubt remember him for a can do attitude and how he enjoyed living life to the fullest despite the obstacles life throws our way.  “You could not dislike him,” said Tim Howard.

Thank you for a kind and touching tribute to Steve Bowers. However, a correction needs to be made. Steve spent his 10 years at the Base working as Executive Support Officer in the Office of the Dean at the Air Force Institute of Technology. Regards, Matt Krumal, family member.
