The Enon Lioness Club has withdrawn their offer to donate $1000 to the village to be used for a water fountain at Settler’s Park.

The offer was made at the May 25 village council meeting.

Parks and Beautification Committee chair Diana Ballard insisted on taking the offer to her committee for approval.

The committee was willing to accept the donation, but Ballard continued to object, claiming that it might become “a liability” to the village.

Ballard also suggested that the funds be used for a basketball hoop for the parks.

“Enon is known as the springs,” said Beth Thomas, President of the Enon Lioness Club.  “That’s where the name came from and we thought [a water fountain] would be a very nice memorial.”

At the July 13 council meeting, Council Clerk Debra Maurer read a letter from the club withdrawing the donation offer.

The letter read, “Because of the incertitude the council seems to have in accepting our donation, which we believe to be of benefit to the Enon community, the Enon Lioness Club has decided to withdraw our offer of providing a water fountain for Settler’s Park.”

The donation was to be the topic of a June 16 Parks & Beautification meeting, but the date was changed on short notice to June 14.  None of the Lioness club members were able to attend on June 14.

“We never heard back from Mrs. Ballard,” said Thomas.  “I have been to the Village website several times, and there were no minutes of the [Parks & Beautification Committee] meeting, so we didn’t know what was happening.”

The club will be using the funds from the withdrawn offer to contribute to Enon Emergency Relief and the Lions Club’s sight programs.
