Through a simply letter, one young man has proven to the Village of Enon Council that adults can learn a lot from children. Enon Elementary fourth grader Connor Algren, 10, wrote a letter to Mayor Cliff Vernon regarding the condition of Enon Park. The mayor was so proud of his idea that he invited Algren to the council meeting on March 9 to introduce him to the council.
Vernon passed Algren’s suggestion on to Parks and Beautification chairperson Diana Ballard who liked the idea. She told Algren that she would arrange a time to meet with Enon Elementary principal Michael Weaver to coordinate a time when the fourth grade can meet the committee at the park to work on the project in the spring. “We should see if there are other children who want to get involved. I think it’s a very good idea,” said Ballard. “I have a lot of friends who want to help,” Algren said. “And his brother,” added his brother Cameron. Vernon commended the boys’ parents for raising kids who are concerned about their community. “You are doing a great job,” he said.
Village administrator
After an hour-long executive session, council voted unanimously to officially name Jason Rose as the Village Administrator.
Rose reported that the Water Treatment Plant project was scheduled to start March 15 and is estimated to take about a month to complete. Because the water softeners are being replaced, there will be an effect to the hardness of the village water during this project.
Rose also reported that a Facebook page has been started for the village and it gained 436 members in six days. Through this page, old photos from the village can be uploaded and residents can receive quick updates. “It’s a wonderful source of communication for residents of Enon,” said Rose. “We can post items for free, such as the agenda or updates. I was surprised we got that many hits that quickly to be honest.”
Ballard reported that a resident approached her about a semi parking in a residential area on Coronado Trail. Rose explained that the village ordinance allows semi parking as long as it is not parked there between the hours of 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. Police Chief Troy Callahan added that it is allowed during the day as long as they have it parked in their own driveway. “I was told it’s on the road,” said Ballard. “We have school buses going through there throughout day, so it can’t be blocking street. Summer is coming and children are going to be home during the day playing along the streets. It’s going to be a big problem and we need to get on it.”
The Public Service Committee will meet at 7 p.m. March 25 to review the employee policy handbook. The Streets and Sidewalks Committee will schedule a meeting after Rose provides a list of streets that were not redone in 2009. The Public Safety Committee will meet at 7 p.m. March 29 to discuss two noise ordinances, the alley behind the Post Office, and any training or equipment requirements for the police department. The Water Committee will meet at 7 p.m. March 17 to review pending stimulus projects. The Finance Committee will schedule a meeting in early April to discuss the finances after the first quarter is over.

Algren suggested some things that should be done to improve the appearance of the park, and he would like to ask the rest of the fourth graders to help.
