The array of high school students sporting their blue corduroy jackets, as they walk the halls of Greenon High School, will take on a new meaning next week as the Greenon High School FFA Organization celebrates National FFA Week.
The 170-member chapter will be celebrating National FFA Week Mar. 1 through Mar. 5. Collin Gierke, Agricultural Instructor and FFA Advisor, guarantees that the week will be filled with special activities and events.
“Our plan is to have several different dress-up days throughout the week, such as blue and gold day, hat day, and flannel day,” said Gierke. “We will also have pedal tractor races, nail driving contest, bale of straw toss, and the big activity, drive your tractor to school day on Mar. 5.”
The theme of National FFA Week this year is “Lead Out Loud” as Greenon High School FFA members pledge to demonstrate what makes them leaders in their school and community.
The focus of the local FFA chapter for the week is to spread the knowledge of agriculture and the opportunities available through FFA to other students and the community.
According to Gierke, the organization is more that farming. The FFA teaches students to “step up and lead the way.” Developing leadership and organizational skills are an important part of FFA.
“We teach multiple areas of agriculture,” Gierke said. “Our goal is for students to learn to be successful in life, and we teach them how to survive life by using agriculture as our base.”
Gierke said that Greenon FFA members have gain visibility among the many chapters in numerous contests at sub-district, district, and state levels.
“Our chapter participates in Livestock and Meat Judging, the Public Speaking Contest, the Job Interview Contest, Soil Judging, Parliamentary Procedures Contest, and the Small Engines Contest,” said Gierke. “We also have a fruit sale each year as well.”
Greenon FFA members also have the opportunity to attend the state and national conventions, county and state fairs farm days, and several conferences. Each year the annual convention brings together thousands of students with a passion for agriculture, and the experience has inspired the members of the local chapter to spread that feeling.
The organization recently held their annual blood drive as part of their community service activities.
“Our FFA chapter organizes this activity with the blood bank to help increase their blood supply,” said Gierke. “This is a small part of helping our community.”
The Greenon High School FFA Organization is currently electing officers for 2010-2011 and is looking forward to numerous, upcoming competitions.
“We elect one position per day as each candidate must go through interviews and video taping before election,” Gierke said.
National FFA Week is sponsored by Tractor Supply Company and Carhartt as a special project of the National FFA Foundation. For more information about Greenon High School FFA, visit www.greenon.k12.oh.us/GHS/departments/agriculture.
