Our last trivia question was, "What is that building connected to the back side of the old library, behind the log house located at 45 Indian Drive?" The building is called the Heritage Room, the home of the Enon Community Historical Society (ECHS). Construction of the Heritage Room began in October 1983 and it opened in 1984. Until September 2009 the Heritage Room shared joint operations with the Enon Mound Library. As you approach the building and look up you will see a bell at the top of the north side. Located on the wall below is a bronze plaque recognizing the 1987 gift from Charlie and Martha Hahn - the Blue Stem School Bell.
Once inside the Heritage Room, members of the ECHS spend many hours volunteering to acquire, organize, index, catalog, identify, store, and maintain the many documents and photos collected in an attempt to preserve history. Stored in the Heritage Room are several thousand reference books, vertical files, and artifacts. Some of the materials that are maintained are newspaper clippings, obituary files, a memorial book, and veteran's books. The Heritage Room maintains a file on every known church, school, and organization in the area-both past and present. The files include records, photos, yearbooks, and other mementos of the various groups. These files are complete only as the organizations or their members make contributions. Donations are most welcome!
The Heritage Room is the gathering place for the various ECHS meetings: ECHS Board Meeting, Apple Butter Festival Committee, Enon Historic Home Tours Committee (new event this year), Christmas Tree Lighting Committee, Valentine Dance Committee, and, of course, the Heritage Room Committee meeting. Genealogy Chats with their various classes and activities are also held in the Heritage Room as well as any special project the ECHS is sponsoring. Also located in the Heritage Room are exhibits of community related themes such as Enon Critters, Log Cabin Days, Our Ethnic Background, and Toys from the Attic. The displays are changed quarterly by the Display Committee and they are always looking for new ideas.
The Heritage Room is open to the public 12 hours per week, Tuesday 1-4, Wednesday 1-4 & 6-8, and Saturday 10-2. Next time you are in the area, stop by the Heritage Room and see what the ECHS has to offer. In addition to all the research material available, there are Cat's Meows, Our Heritage book, historical photo playing card deck, medallions, note cards, and membership cards, to name a few. Hopefully, if it is about history in or around Enon, it can be found in the Heritage Room.
What is the Blue Stem School Bell, you ask? Find out in our next article.
