The mission of the Enon Eagle is to inform the community. We accomplish that mission by attending public meetings and other events and telling you what happened. And we report as truthfully and objectively as we can.
Village Council member Diana Ballard has again publicly questioned the integrity of this newspaper. She referred to an article in the Oct. 20 issue of the Enon Eagle in which we reported on the actions taken by the Village Council and comments made about Ballard’s absences from numerous meetings. “While I was out of town, some of the articles that were printed about me were unnecessary,” she said during the Oct. 26 council meeting. She questioned this newspaper’s decision to print an article about her absences and removal from village committees as a result of those absences. Ballard dwelled upon the website headline that read “Ballard In Hot Water For Absences.” She apparently was not aware that she was in “hot water.” When one is removed from committee assignments and one’s future with the organization is called into question, one can reasonably assume that one is in hot water. You generally are not awarded promotions or medals for failing to honor your commitments. The council members on Oct. 12 gave every indication that she was in “hot water.” “I’m not in hot water, Mr. Grimm,” said Ballard. “”When you start demeaning my character, then I’m going to come into defense.” “You can print what you want,” continued Ballard, “but when you start cutting my character down with this community, you’re walking on thin ice with me.” We reported that Diana Ballard was removed from two council committees. That is a fact. We reported that Council President Steve Trout stated she had missed four meetings. That is a fact. We reported that Council Member Denise D’Agostino stated Ballard had informed her that Ballard would not be attending the next Public Service meeting and that she had attended only one of the past five meetings. That is a fact. We reported that Trout called into question her future with the council. That is a fact. We reported nothing but facts which is our job. We did not demean or cut down Ballard’s character. If there was any demeaning of her character, it was done by her and by her fellow council members. Then she went on to say, “Crap sells, and that’s exactly what’s in the Enon Eagle as far as I’m concerned.” We post recordings of Enon Council meetings on our website so residents can listen and decide for themselves if our stories are an accurate record of council meetings. It must be noted that Ballard has tried restricting our ability to record meetings. If Ballard feels the best way to serve her constituents is by missing meetings and then calling this newspaper profane names…that is her decision. It will also be the residents decision if Ballard decides to run for re-election when her term expires. We promise you, our readers, that we will continue to print the facts and actions of the Enon Council, even if it rubs certain members the wrong way. “Crap” doesn’t sell newspapers Councilmember Ballard…the truth does! |
